What are the benefits of CoolSculpting?
Patients can benefit from CoolSculpting with noticeable, yet natural-looking, results in their problem areas, providing an overall smoother body contour. CoolSculpting is most effective in removing fat from the abdomen, love handles (flanks) and back. Yet, with the release of the CoolSmooth applicator in May 2014, Frederick Dermatology Associates can now shrink and contour those stubborn areas like outer and inner thighs, as well as arms.
How does CoolSculpting work?
The results of the CoolSculpting procedure are achieved using the advanced Cryolipolysis™ technology, which cools the targeted tissue to break down the fat cells for easy removal, without any harm to the surrounding tissue. The technique was discovered at Harvard University and is proven scientifically to be safe and effective. Fat cells have been proven to be more vulnerable to cold than the surrounding tissue. This stimulates a natural fat removal process that continues for several months after the procedure.
Does CoolSculpting hurt?
In general, there is minimal discomfort with CoolSculpting. Rarely, discomfort can start 1-2 days after the procedure. Yet, it is extremely rare to require medication to dull the pain. It is the experience of Frederick Dermatology Associates, that about 5% of patients may require a local anesthetic patch after their procedure to take away discomfort. However, overall during and after the procedure, most patients continue their regular schedule and experience no downtime. In fact, since Frederick Dermatology Associates’s CoolSculpting suite has a big screen television, many patients catch up on the latest movies and shows while the procedure is occurring.
How long does a CoolSculpting treatment take?
Depending on the area treated, each individual treatment may range from 35 minutes to an hour. The entire session can range from one treatment to many, so the length of the treatment sessions varies.
How long is CoolSculpting effective?
CoolSculpting is long-lasting and effective. As long as one does not override the system and gain multiple pounds, one’s results should last for many years. The fat cells breakdown and are permanently eliminated, and since you are only born with a finite number of fat cells, you will always have less fat cells in the treated areas. Moreover, with new treat to transformation protocols with CoolSculpting, one can expect similar to liposuction results. Is there any recovery involved with CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is very well tolerated during and after the procedure. The procedure may be slightly uncomfortable during the first few minutes of treatment, but the discomfort is from the cold and gradually turns into a barely noticeable numbness. In fact, many of our patients to return to work or go to the gym immediately after their appointment.

Does CoolSculpting cause skin tightening or laxity?
There are reported cases of skin tightening occurring with CoolSculpting, but the majority of patients do not see tightening with the procedure. CoolSculpting is not approved in the United States as a tightening device. We have seen no cases where CoolSculpting has caused laxity of the skin. During the consultation, our experienced staff will assess the quality of your skin and address this concern if it bothers you. Frederick Dermatology does have non-invasive tightening procedures which may help.
