THE TIXEL

The Tixel device is a non-laser fractional skin rejuvenation system that uses heat to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of the skin. It is a handheld device that delivers controlled thermal energy through a grid of tiny heated pins and is safe for all skin types.

The Tixel has been proven effective at improving skin conditions even in tough to treat areas such as periorbital (around the eyes), perioral (around the mouth), acne scarring, and the decollete. Using a hot pyramidic metallic tip, heat is applied quickly and safely upon contact with skin. This creates superficial dehydrated channels that act as a dry sponge ready to absorb topical agents such as PRP while maintaining the most superficial layer of the skin, making it safe to treat any area of the body. This revolutionary treatment is optimal for collagen and elastin production. It helps sun damaged skin, scar and stretch mark reduction, melasma, and even has been shown to improve rosacea.

How does Tixel Work?

Tixel uses a heated titanium tip to transfer thermal energy to the skin causing controlled micro injuries that stimulate the body’s natural healing process and collagen production.

Who is a candidate for Tixel treatment?

The Tixel device can be used to address various skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin texture, sun damage, and pigmentation issues. It can also improve skin laxity and overall skin tone. The best part is there is little to no downtime.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I prepare for my treatment?

The treatment is not advised for tan skin, so stay out of the sun prior to your appointment and please arrive with clean, dry skin free from makeup. You will be provided with a prescription for topical lidocaine ointment which can be applied to clean, dry skin 60 minutes prior to treatment. Plan to avoid skin care products and makeup applications for 6 hours after treatment.

What can I expect during the treatment?

The Tixel treatment can cause some discomfort, but it is generally well-tolerated by most individuals. Before the treatment, a topical anesthetic cream will be applied to minimize any discomfort. The sensation during the treatment is often described as a warm or prickling feeling. We have nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help with pain control if needed at an additional cost.

How long does a Tixel treatment session take?

The duration of a Tixel treatment session can vary depending on the area being treated and the specific concerns. Generally, a treatment session can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Redness and swelling are the most common for 3-4 hours post-treatment followed by mild, blotchy redness, or a sunburn like sensation can occur (but will last just a few hours). Usually, patients see a bronzing effect of the skin for 4-7 days after the treatment. By 7-10 days your pigmentation will look better than ever. If you have melasma, darkening can appear as part of the healing process but can be covered by makeup. Using Alastin Skin Nectar (available for purchase at our Aura Store) can decrease the inflammation and downtime. Avoid excessive sun exposure, rigorous exercise, or fully submerging the treated area in water for at least 24 hours post treatment. Gentle cleansers should be used followed by Alastin Skin Nectar, as well as moisturizer and sunscreen. Avoid retinol products (or any products which may dry out your skin such as alpha or beta-hydroxy acids) for 1 week after treatment.

How is Tixel different from microneedling, RF microneedling and laser for resurfacing?

Tixel uses heat to create the fractionated rejuvenation channels and when the heat is delivered it does not disrupt the epidermis (first layer of the skin). Therefore, recovery is much quicker without the treatment losing any effectiveness. In fact, Tixel has significant clinical results and can be used to deliver PRP (which is rich in growth factors) to the 2nd layer of the skin where generation of collagen and elastin can occur more than when this is used without the PRP. Many treatments cannot open the channels as well to receive it. The PRP with Tixel especially has little downtime and minimal discomfort.

How many treatments do I need to see results?

The number of Tixel treatments required can vary depending on the individual's skin condition and desired results. Typically, a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced several weeks apart is recommended for optimal results. Improvement in the skin's appearance can be seen gradually over time as collagen production is stimulated. Significant improvement is usually achieved after just one treatment.

Is the Tixel treatment suitable for all skin types?

The Tixel treatment is generally safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones. However, it is important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or dermatologist to determine if the treatment is suitable for your specific skin concerns and skin type. It's important to note that the specific details and recommendations for Tixel treatments may vary depending on the provider and individual circumstances. It is always best to consult with a board-certified dermatologist to assess your skin concerns and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you. Tixel may not be suitable for those with active skin infections, certain skin disorders, or those who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine if Tixel is right for you.

Why use PRP alongside Tixel treatment?

At Frederick Dermatology Associates, PRP used topically after Tixel treatments is the standard of care for a plethora of reasons:
  1. 1. Enhanced Collagen Stimulation: PRP contains growth factors and platelets that can stimulate collagen production and promote tissue regeneration. When combined with Tixel treatment, which creates microchannels in the skin, PRP can penetrate deeper into the skin and enhance collagen synthesis, leading to improved skin texture and firmness.

  2. 2. Accelerated Healing and Recovery: PRP has been shown to accelerate the healing process and reduce downtime after cosmetic procedures. When applied immediately after Tixel treatment, PRP can help soothe the skin, reduce redness, and promote faster healing, allowing for a quicker recovery.

  3. 3. Improved Skin Tone and Texture: The combination of Tixel and PRP can help improve skin tone and texture by addressing concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven pigmentation. The collagen-stimulating effects of PRP, combined with the skin resurfacing and rejuvenating properties of Tixel, can lead to smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

  4. 4. Natural and Safe Treatment: PRP is derived from the patient's own blood, making it a natural and safe treatment option. It reduces the risk of allergic reactions or adverse effects since it utilizes the body's own healing mechanisms.

  5. 5. Long-lasting Results: The combination of Tixel and PRP can provide long-lasting results. The collagen production stimulated by PRP, along with the skin remodeling induced by Tixel treatment, can lead to sustained improvements in skin quality and appearance over time.

Are there any potential side effects of Tixel treatments?

Potential side effects include temporary redness, swelling, and a mild burning sensation. In very rare cases, changes in skin color and infection may occur.
